“Cancer is just a word, like pizza.” That is what Cody tells his overprotective mother to convince her to let him try out for the soccer team. He wants to play more than anything, but after going through treatment to remove a tumour from his leg he’s worried whether he’ll make it. But that’s not all he has to worry about. His dad dealt with his illness by working, and he misses the time they used to spend together; an overbearing team manager sends him to the bench so his son will get all the playing time; and a group of kids make it clear they have no interest in having an “Egg Head” on the team. Cody is resilient, however; a kid who can handle cancer treatment and then make a competitive soccer team is no quitter. His skills begin to attract the attention of a few of his teammates; and when a new coach arrives on the team, Cody finally gets his chance...Click link to read MORE!

  3. This book Striker written by David Skuy was a page turner where I could not wait to find out what happened in the end. What happened was the team got down to the minimum amount of players and stuck together and won the tournament.

  4. This book was a very fast paced book. It had to do with discrimination based on the way that Cody looked. The people on his team called him names that were very hurtful like, chicken leg, and egg head. I liked this book but it could have had a stronger ending.-Sophia kozak.

  5. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. In the beginning i really didn't like it, in the middle I was starting to like it, and by the end i liked it a lot! I also felt really bad for Cody because people were making fun of him even though the didn't know what he's gone through

  6. This book was really inspiring. I couldn't believe that Cody achieved his dream of playing soccer. I also thought it was amazing he scored a goal. I loved the book so much that I would read it many more times. The only thing I thought could have been better was to include more of his life at home, rather than on the soccer field. -Daniel Rain

  7. I liked this book because it was really inspiring. The boy in the story doesn't give up and doesn't let the bullies make him quit and all his hard work pays off. I would recommend it.

  8. I think this was a really strong book. I think it was very realistic, in the way that any child would have trouble getting back to normal after going through Cancer. Also I think it is very inspiring, because Cody had to go through so much, but he still made it through. That is why I think this book is so powerful, but good.

    1. I agree. You should keep doing what you love unless you physically can't do it. In this case it was soccer.

To be honest out of all the Silver Birch books, I wasn't very impressed with them, but this one I felt really connected to since I play soccer it felt good reading play by play action and always being eager to see what happens on the next page. ps sorry if my punctuation is bad im currently in a rush.

  12. This book was really inspirational to kids who have a tough life or who like to play soccer. I like how Cody's friends are wavering in their friendship a bit, but at the end of the book they end up being true to him. I recommend this book to sooooo many people.
